The Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is celebrated every year in the Congregation in several
areas where there are the convents of the Daughters of the Sacred Heart on the island of
Malta.
In Hamrun, the feast is celebrated one week after the Liturgical Feast. A high Mass is
celebrated in the Church dedicated to ‘il-Madonna tas-Samra’.
Hamrun is the birth place of St George Preca, the first saint of the Maltese Islands who has
been canonised by Pope Benedict XVI in 2007. The remains of the Servant of God, Mother
Theresa Nuzzo are also found in this church.
In 2016, the Mass was celebrated by Hamrun Parish Priest Fr Walter Cauchi. Several girls
and boys who received the Sacrament of the Eucharist for the first time this year were
present, together with many Sisters of the Congregation Daughters of the Sacred Heart, their
relatives and friends, and the people of this area of Hamrun.
A good number of Indian and
Kenyan Sisters who were attending the General Conference of the Congregation were present
for this celebration.
Following Mass, there was a procession with the Blessed Sacrament, accompanied with
reflections, prayers, and the singing of the people. At the end, the Benediction was given
from the porch of the Church. Throughout the procession and the Benediction, the Blessed
Sacrament was honoured with the presence and the playing of instruments of numerous boys
and girls Scouts.
A traditional practice since the time of Mother Foundress is the
accompaniment of a small group of young flower girls who devotedly give out flowers to
Jesus in the blessed Sacrament.
